The Class-10-to-Doctor Roadmap in India, Explained Simply

Medicine is a calling for many students, but it is also a long road that deserves to be understood clearly before you set out. Here is the complete journey, in plain terms — including the honest length of it, which is something families often underestimate.

Step 1 — Class 11 & 12: Science with Biology (PCB)

Medicine requires Biology. In Class 11 you'll take Physics, Chemistry and Biology. These two years are the foundation for NEET and for the heavy science of the degree itself.

Step 2 — The Entrance Exam: NEET

There is one main gateway: NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). It is the single entrance exam for MBBS and most medical courses across India, and it is intensely competitive. Serious preparation usually spans the two years of Class 11 and 12.

Step 3 — The Degree: MBBS (about 5.5 years)

MBBS itself takes roughly five and a half years, including a year of compulsory internship where you work in a hospital under supervision. This is when you become a doctor in the basic sense — but for many fields, the journey continues.

Step 4 — Specialisation (optional but common)

Many doctors go on to specialise — in areas like surgery, paediatrics, cardiology, radiology and dozens more — through a postgraduate entrance exam and an MD/MS degree of a few more years. Super-specialisation adds more years still.

From Class 11 to a fully specialised doctor can realistically take a decade or more. Going in with eyes open is part of choosing well.

After qualifying, doctors work in government or private hospitals, run their own practice, move into public health, research, hospital administration or teaching. The training is long, but the field offers genuine meaning and a wide range of directions.

Science with Biology → NEET → MBBS (~5.5 years) → optional specialisation. It is long, demanding and competitive — but for the right student, deeply rewarding. The best first step is an honest look at whether the day-to-day work of caring for patients is something you genuinely want.
